The recent cast additions to the humor comic Ginger’s Bread have left me conflicted. The comic already has a large and well-developed cast with plenty of story hooks to build upon, thus leaving me to wonder why the comic needs new cast members. However, the characters have not come out of the blue; cartoonist Carl Sjostrand first planted the seeds for their arrival a month back with the logical explanation that Ginger needed to hire additional employees to handle the more mundane tasks of running her new bakery. He even went a step further and used a one-shot character who’d been last seen working as a mall elf during the Christmas season as one of the two new hirees. My suspicion is that once Sjostrand has established the two, they’ll fade into the background, rather than joining the main cast; still, I’ll admit I’m concerned the comic might start succumbing to the siren call of complexity. How Sjostrand handles his new cast members (and the original cast) in the next few months will be telling.
